They were the years of the “Sardomobiles”,boxed into city traffic. “You know it’s true: Sardomobiles have 4 wheels, butthey’d rather have 2. Like the Ciao”, said the famous advertisement from theperiod, helping to spread the fame of the Piaggio moped. The Ciao and otherlegendary two-wheelers from the past powered by small 50cc hearts were thesubject of the retrospective at the latest edition of theExhibition-Mart ofVintageAutomobiles, Motorcycles and Bicycles in Novegro.

This year’s stars were mopeds built in the1970s. The exhibition took visitors on a fascinating journey into the past,recalling the names, associated with the Italian two-wheeler industry inparticular, that helped power mass motorisation. Among the vintage pieces onshow regarded as landmarks in the history of small-size motorcycling were thePiaggio Ciao (produced for almost 40 years, from 1967 to 2006, a success storywith more than 3.5 million models produced, the best-selling Italian moped inthe world).
